It is true that many people that start a low fat or a low calorie diet will often end up heavier than their pre-diet weight. Though they do lose weight with these diets, what hits them is the regain that occurs months later. Some of what contribute to this regain is a slowed metabolism and an increased sense of hunger among others. The research quoted in this video – from Gary Taubes book "Good Calories Bad Calories" is testimony to this.

I like the way the presenter is referring to low fat and low calorie diets as semi-starvation diets. This is because most people equate dieting to starving themselves for a while. However I do need to note some misinformation that is would be passed on in this video; and that is the concept of "unlimited calories". Calorie counting and calorie counters may not be many dieters favorite but they form the fundamenatlas of losing weight.

First you need to understand that the science of losing weight depends on a calorie deficit - however you achieve it. This means that to lose weight you have to consume fewer calories than you need or spend more calories than you have eaten. This can be achieved by, one; reducing the amounts of calories you eat, two; increasing calorie expenditure e.g. through exercising or three; using both techniques.  SmartDiets Profile (40 lbs in 12 wks? Get free diet recomendation) is particularly effective because it uses both exercises and diets to achieve healthy weight loss. And that’s why it able to lead to huge loses in weight in a short time.

The concept of unlimited calories as forwarded at the end of this video can then be confusing to a lay man. It is the same arguments forwarded in low carb diets like Atkins. It is usually presented as "you can eat all you want (unlimited calories) of a certain food group". However it has been proven that even the results you get with diets like Atkins are because of a lower calorie intake (see the video here).

Here is the explanation; the diet recommended in the video as well as diets like atkins contain high amounts of proteins – particularly meats. And though beef and tuna do have equivalent calories to carbohydrates, they do not result to the same increase in sugar levels in the blood as carbs do. It is the spike of blood sugar in the body that results to the sugar being converted into body fat using insulin.

To make matters better for proteins, the body does not store proteins in the body. Once you eat your meat, it is broken down into its components (amino acids). The body picks the amino acids it need to use in the body, for repairing tissues or forming new muscles for example, and then excretes the rest. Your body always prefers carbohydrates as a source of energy. And though if put in dire need of energy, it can use proteins, it usually does not.

Even when using amino acids (proteins) for energy the biological path used to create glucose from protein is so elaborate and produces just enough glucose that it does not cause the spike in blood sugar that demands the excess glucose to be stored as body fat.

So unlike carbohydrates that are absorbed as glucose and when in excess is stored as body fat, proteins do not follow the same biochemical pathway. So evidently, you will seem to be eating unlimited calories, but in reality your body does not translate it as such.

I’m sure a high protein diet then looks very attractive right about now. However, experts are very wary of these diets because you body will need to flush out all that excess proteins. Remember you body does not store amino acids (proteins) as it does with carbs (body fat). Experts note that this could end up straining your kidneys and causing other complications.

This kind of scientific understanding of dieting is the reason I highly recommend  SmartDiets Profile (40 lbs in 12 wks? Get free diet recomendation) . This is because they have a team of certified experts e.g. dieticians, medical doctors etc, that customize your weight loss program. Such a program avoids the risks of a strict high protein diets as well as the semi-starvation diets like most low calories diets.

Though some of these diets may work for some people, the problem is usually the long term health as well as weight regain that most often happens once you go back to normal eating. Consider GHF below, they currently have a great offer.
