Atkins Diet

Is the heated Atkins diet debate cooling

Calorie Shifting - Lose 40 pounds in 12 weeks

Atkins Diet was developed by Dr Robert C. Atkins. He founded Atkins Nutritional in 1989 with the view to change the way the world eats, to promote good health.

He passed away in the 2003. Atkins Diet has gone on to be probably the most popular Low Carb Diet

Dr Atkins first weight loss book "Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution" was published in 1972 promoting controlled carbohydrates nutrition and complementary medical techniques. Dr Atkins had since written several other books.

Atkins diet has been dogged with a lot of controversies, from court suits e.g Jody Gorran, a 53-year-old businessman has sued Atkins Nutritionals Inc. and the estate of Robert C. Atkins, M.D., for negligent mis-representation, product liability, and deceptive and unfair trade practices. To negative publicity e.g. the paper by the American Heart Association denouncing high-protein, low carb diets such as Atkins diet in 2002.

Low carb diets have been a contentious issue for some time now. Mis-information on this particular topic in weight loss diets is rife.  Fat Loss 4 Idiots (lose 40 lbs with Calorie Shifting ) however lists "low carbing" as one of the weak dieting strategies. Though effective in the short term it is weak in healthy and sustainable weight loss.

This has lead to moidifications to the diet to give rise to other weight loss diets like south beach diet, hamptons diet and "no flour no sugar diet".

Atkins Diet Action Path

Atkins diet is designed on the supposition that the body switches from sugar metabolism to a primarily fat metabolism as long as the person stays below their critical carbohydrates tolerance (CCT). CCT is the point at which the no longer primarily burn body fat for fuel. Today however the use of the Glycemic Index Diets is considered a better science in encouraging fat burning.

One of the arguments leveled against Atkins Diet is its high dietary fat content that critics claim raises blood cholesterol levels increasing risks of a heart disease. While the lifetime maintenance phase of Atkins, diet changes in macronutrients occur and this can disrupt metabolism and result to weight gain. This would probably occur as you reintroduce carbohydrates and cut back on saturated fats.

Atkins diet often does achieve calorie deficit needed for weight loss. The unconventional diet of mainly proteins is used to create satiety and a sense of being full to avoid consumption of the high calorie foods: mostly sugars and carbohydrates.

With time though, Atkins has softened its stand concerning carbohydrates from, "most carbs are bad" to there are "good and bad carbs". High protein, low carb diets popularized by Atkins diet have been subject to heated debate in the nutrition circles for three decades. But there still is increasing evidence that diets like Atkins DO result to weight loss.

Infact as opposed to popular belief some research has found that Atkins diet does improve cholesterol levels by the end of 6 months. With time we see Atkins diet and similar diets constantly improving their dieting recommendation. This is as conclusive information on weight loss and effects of their high fat and high proteins are unveiled.

Atkins Diet Phases

The Atkins diet program is in four phases.
Induction Phase: This kick starts your body into lypolysis i.e. principally metabolism of body fats. This results to ketosis. This is intended to stabilize blood sugar and curb cravings by breaking "carbohydrate addictions". The stage lasts for 14 days and consist liberal eating of all other food groups with most minimum carbohydrates.

    Ongoing Weight Loss Phase:
This involves the gradual reintroduction of good carbohydrates in form of complex carbohydrates with low glycemic index. Glycemic index is a weight loss tool for determining quality of a carbohydrate.

Beginning this stage you have to start counting calories. In words of Atkins Diet "if you do not count [calories], you could be in trouble". This can be agonizing for some, but the system tries to help by including a calorie counter. Reintroduction of carbohydrates will continue to the point you realize you are not loosing weight anymore. An inherent advantage of Atkins diet is the personalizing of your eating program.

A section called mind and body connection takes on the psychological aspect of weight loss. Here they encourage you to be specific, to visualize and keep tab of your progress.

Pre-maintenance Phase: This phase is the home stretch. About 10 pounds from your goal you deliberately slow down the weight loss process to internalize habits you have acquired. This is most probably introduced to curb weight regain that is common in these kinds of diets, but phrased in more politically correct terms. Atkins diet urges you not to try and skip this important phase.

Life maintenance Phase: This involves selecting from a wide variety of foods to control carbohydrate intake to ensure weight maintenance and a sense of well-being.
A research in New England Journal of Medicine, May 2003 found that people on a high protein, high fat, low carb like Atkins Diet lost twice as much weight over six months than those on a standard low fat diet recommended by most health agencies. However the study also showed that the Atkins diet participant regained much of the weight by the end of one year, eventually showing no major difference between the two diets.

Atkins diet has undoubtedly proven to be effective in the short term. Sustaining the weight loss success is a whole different issue.

A review of 107 research studies on various low carb, high protein weight loss diets concluded that weight loss on these diets is not due to any special effect of restriction carbs. Rather on calorie reduction and how long one stayed on the regime.

The Nutrition Committee of the Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism of the American Heart Association states, "High protein diets are not recommended because they restrict healthful foods that provide essential nutrients and do not provide the variety of foods needed to adequately meet nutritional needs. Individuals who follow these diets are at risk for compromised vitamins and mineral intake as well as potential cardiac, renal, bone and liver anomalies overall."

This is the same position held by Fat Loss 4 Idiots (lose 40 lbs with Calorie Shifting ) . As much as any effective weight loss involves reduced food intake, you should get all your nutrients from what you eat. For you to attain permanent weight loss you should approach it from a comprehensive point view. In Fat Loss 4 Idiots (lose 40 lbs with Calorie Shifting ) this all inclusive approach is identified as follows;
    1. Physiology: This entails the already discussed aspect of controlled calorie intake and expenditure. Many diets including the Atkins Diet have a lot to be desired in this aspect,

    2. Psychology: This is probably the less tackled of the disciplines. The psychology for weight loss is an integral part of a comprehensive weight loss plan. Infact permanent weight loss is impossible without its inclusion in your program. This is an aspect not covered by the Atkins Diet.
