Ephedra has been an ingredient of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for a number of centuries. However, its abuse in weight loss supplement resulted to its banning in the use of diet supplement in the U.S.

This resulted to what was known as the ECA stack. ECA stands for Ephedra, Caffeine and Asprin. This mixture of natural sources of brain stimulants marketed as a herbal preparation ended up being associated with a number of deaths. Ephera was then banned in the U.S as FDA came to the conclusion that its benefit was grossly out weighed by its side effects. 

Ephedrine however is still available and since it is designated as a drug, its use in products is under strict control. This is unlike ephedra which is a herb or diet supplement. These are minimally regulated.
