Exercise For A Flat Stomach

Avoid this big mistake in flat stomach exercises

Most exercises for a flat stomach will nearly always tend to be exercises that target abdominal muscles. The idea is that if you want to lose fat around your belly, you need to work out the muscles around this area. Hence, the abdominal exercises.

But amongst flat stomach exercises, this is probably the most deceptive myth. Infact, an effective exercise for a flat stomach need not target the abdomen muscles at all.

The idea that you can target a body area and lose fat from only that area is called "spot reduction". It is a concept particularly promoted by companies advertising their abs gadgets and products. They imply that by using their product you will work your abdominal muscles. And that those muscles will use the fat around the abdomen for energy, resulting to lose of belly fat.

America Council on Exercises (ACE) references some studies that refute spot reduction.

One such study was done on tennis players.

In one study, for example, the circumferences and fat deposits in the arms of high-level tennis players were compared.

The investigators proposed that if spot reduction worked, the playing arm of a tennis player should have considerably less fat than the inactive arm.

This prediction, however, was not the case.

Despite the fact that circumference measures in the playing arms of the athletes were greater due to more muscular development, skinfold thickness measures revealed no difference in fat deposition between the two arms.

If you read a lot of the material easily accessible about losing belly fat, you will find that many do seem to concur that spot reduction is a myth.

So, the question then is, why is spot reduction used so often in advertising. Are these advertising companies blatantly deceiving?

How would an exercise for a flat stomach work?

Also in the ACE website is referenced another study that may help explain why the idea of spot reduction persist. This was a study conducted at the University of Massachusetts in the mid-1980s.

In this investigation, 13 male subjects participated in a vigorous abdominal exercise training program for 27 days. Each participant in the study was required to perform a total of 5,000 sit-ups over the course of the research project. Fat biopsies were obtained from the subjects' abdomens, buttocks and upper backs before and after the exercise program.

Contrary to what spot-reducing proponents would have you believe, the results of the study revealed that fat decreased similarly at all three sites—not just in the abdominal region.

These findings may help explain one reason why spot reducing sometimes appears to work. If the caloric expenditure is sufficient enough, it will cause fat from the entire body to be reduced, including a particular target area.

Evidently intense abdominal exercises can result to a flat stomach. So, theoretically speaking, the promotions that a particular flat stomach product will lose you belly fat is not completely untrue.

However, it is harder, much harder to get a flat stomach using ab exercises only.

The best exercises for flat stomach

Similarly when it comes to losing the fat, the body will tend to lose it following a first in last out basis. So, you tend to lose fat first in the area you gained last. Then as you lose more and more fat, you start losing in the area you gained fat first.

This explains why many men find belly fat to be the last to go and women find fat on their hips, buttocks and thighs the most difficult to deal with.

So what exercise would be best to see your flat stomach the fastest? The answer is simple, the execises that will burn you the most fats the quickest.
