Glycemic Index Diet

Is glycemic index diet the next frontier

Calorie Shifting - Lose 40 pounds in 12 weeks

Glycemic Index Diet or GI Diet as it is sometimes referred is lately a growing furore. This is so particularly in UK, as results of its popularization by books like 'GI Diet' by Rick Gallop.

Infact some speculate that Glycemic Index Diet is stealing the thunder off the popular but controversial Atkins Diet

Unlike Atkins though, Glycemic Index Diet is not a particular diet. Rather it is a group of diets. Just like Low Carb Diets include Atkins and 'No Flour No Sugar Diet', GI diets are diets based on the numerical indices Glycemic Index (GI) and Glycermic Load (GL).

Glycemic Index is a dietary index use to rank carbohydrates based on their effects on blood sugar. This is then compared to the effect of pure glucose whose GI is the 100 and the reference. A foods GI can be as low as zero and even greater than 100 like Dextrose which has a GI of 138.

GI diets are based on the fact that fluctuations of the hormone insulin determines whether glucose in blood stream is stored as body fat or it is used up in metabolism to provide energy for the body. Insulin level on the other hand depends on the amounts of glucose available in the blood stream in any one time.

High amount of glucose in blood encourage secretions of insulin that encourage fat deposition. While lower levels of glucose inhibit insulin encouraging fat oxidation hence weight loss. GI diet depends on the fact that some food have the ability to increase glucose concentration in blood very fast encouraging fat deposition while other do not and encourage fat burning.

The weight loss diets consequently encourages low GI food and discourages the high GI foods. Fat Loss 4 Idiots (lose 40 lbs with Calorie Shifting )  relies heavily on this proven physiological fact for sustainable weight loss.

GI Diets Grows in Popularirty

This concept is believed to be knocking the wind off Atkins sails as the diet flourished on the fact that carbohydrates can make you fat. GI, literally helps one differentiate which carbohydrates would really be fattening, and which ones would not.

Atkins diet and other spin offs of Low Carb Diets have been a concern to many nutritional experts. Their recommendations of high proteins and fats always viewed with great suspicion. And though such diets have shown to scientifically lead to even more weight loss than conventional diets, they are viewed as potentially unhealthy in the long term.

The fact that high fat amount and a lot of animals proteins in diets are closely related to poor health indication like increased risk of heart disease and cancers have been unsettling. So happy are experts with GI that even World Health Organisation (WHO) has given a thumbs up for Glycemic Index Diets.

But even amidst this jubilation amongst experts, it the GI diet really the perfect diet? Could it have its limitations? We think it does.

Firstly, its implementation is not as easy as it sounds. For example 50 grams of white bread will definitely spike your blood sugar level. Obviously, so will 25g of white bread only that the smaller portion will spike it half the height of the larger portion. And since GI diet consider the extent as height of the sugar level, this would leave a novice wondering is white bread allowed or not.

This has lead to the inclusion of a better metric, Glycemic Load at GL. GL gives the GI in a particular serving of a particular food, making it a little bit easier to select you portions, from allowable foods. Unfortunately these is scarcity of GI and GL data. For example Nutrition Data.com notes that only 5% of foods in their database have their GI values determined.  Fat Loss 4 Idiots (lose 40 lbs with Calorie Shifting ) aims to provide practical means to help in making these simple but critical choices.

Secondly, the diet may not be taking into consideration other lifestyle issue rather than diet. Like most weight loss diets, it always seems that increased physical activity is a far second priority in weight loss. Yet weight loss exercises are proven not only to be effective adjuncts to diets but also effective in maintaining the new found weight.
