Hypnosis for Weight Loss

The advantages, benefits, and disadvantages

The effectiveness of hypnosis for weight loss management was put to the test when Dateline NBC placed six obese individuals in a weight loss contest. With the result that the individual using the method lost more weight than those on Slimfast and Weight Watchers.

What exactly is hypnosis for weight loss? It utilizes the techniques of hypnosis to effect long-term changes in an individual’s behavior towards food and exercise. This is achieved by allowing the individual under hypnosis to gain more control over his behavior and emotions.

What Happens?

For initial cases of weight loss hypnosis  you will be guided by a hypnotherapist although self-hypnotism is also possible.

Depending on personal preferences, various methods of hypnosis will be applied but common elements like the resumption of activities after each session and bringing yourself out of the trancelike state will be observed.

Note that inspite of hypnosis being particulaurly effective for some, it is always done in conjuction with an effective diet plan.

Contrary to popular belief, however, you will not be put to an unconscious state resembling sleep. Instead, you are fully awake during the whole process and the hypnotherapist cannot make you do things that you don’t want to do.

This is not, after all, stage hypnotism.

The differences between the hypnotic state and the waking state lie in enhanced level of focused attention such that there is a diminished awareness of the surroundings, a heightened suggestibility to even the most bizarre of imageries and connections, and a deep state of relaxation during hypnosis.

It’s in this trancelike state that hypnosis for weight loss comes into the picture. But first, let’s secure some basic information about the conscious and subconscious mind.

When awake, the conscious mind works to evaluate the thoughts and ideas coming from the subconscious mind. It then puts the abstract ideas into concrete action, which we see as the “mind in action”. In addition, the conscious mind processes new information about the surroundings and transmits it to the subconscious mind.

On the other hand, the subconscious mind controls the bodily sensations of touch, taste, sight, and hearing in addition to being the seat of the wide range of emotions and feelings of each individual. Thus, it significantly influences behavior and actions borne of its decision-making capabilities.

However, the subconscious mind takes a backseat to the conscious mind when an individual is awake, with a reversal of roles during sleep. It is during the trancelike state achieved during hypnosis for weight loss that the subconscious mind comes to the fore even when in one is awake.

Weight Loss and the Subconcoius Mind

In hypnosis for weight loss, the subconscious mind is opened to make it more receptive to suggestions that the conscious mind will not accept under normal circumstances. When suggestions for weight loss measures, ideas, and imageries are carefully filtered into and subsequently absorbed by the subconscious mind, these are taken as facts by the subconscious mind upon which the conscious mind will act on.

For example, the hypnotherapist will suggest either negative connections between the objects of the bad habit and the unwanted consequences when these objects are catered to or positive associations between the desired activity and its benefits.

Thus, you will be hypnotized into subconsciously accepting that sweets and fatty foods are bad for your health, often resorting to negative imagery like nausea after consumption or certain foods as extremely undesirable things. On the other hand, your subconscious mind will be made to accept suggestions like exercise is good for the body and fruits are your friends. In time, these associations will be absorbed and accepted by the subconscious mind and on which the conscious mind can act on without further ado.

Hypnosis for weight loss is not just mumbo-jumbo. Research has proven that an individual under hypnosis exhibits reduced activity in the left hemisphere but increased activity in the right hemisphere of the brain’s cerebral cortex. It must be noted that the former controls logic while the latter controls creativity. This rhymes with the findings that in hypnosis for weight loss, imagination, and creativity are enhanced to make the mind more open to suggestions related to effective weight loss management.

Of course, the effectiveness of hypnosis as a weight loss method will vary with each individual. There is also the duration and intensity of the sessions that can affect long-term effectiveness. It must be noted, however, that hypnosis works for most individuals in conjunction with other weight loss treatments as is the case with  "Go Beyond Calories" (And Lose Belly Fat Permanetly)  .

What Will You Get?

There are many advantages and benefits of hypnosis. Because hypnosis provides an avenue for greater control of yourself, you can possess the willpower to overcome undesirable urges, feelings, and emotions in your life.

Thus, in weight loss, an individual can consciously exercise better control over the urge to binge on food and the laziness to undertake exercise. Because the subconscious mind has accepted that overeating is bad for the health and exercise is good for the body, the conscious mind acts on the negative/positive association with more ease and faster results. The result – quicker weight loss and better weight management.

However, the benefits hypnosis for weight loss does not end there. Hypnosis allows the individuals to access hidden potentials, manage stress, sharpen focus and hone attention spans, and get in touch with the inner self in all of us. In other words, it can help an individual achieve a better quality of life.

But the best things about hypnosis for weight loss is its non-invasive nature, which is unlike weight loss surgeries like liposuction and gastric bypass; it's non-addictive in nature since no pills are ingested; its relative safety especially when done by a qualified hypnotherapist and by one’s self once the techniques are taught; and its flexibility to adapt to various weight loss circumstances.

Fortunately, there are no significant disadvantages to hypnosis as a dieting tool. Some individuals complain of headaches, dizziness, and nausea but these are exceedingly rare and are often remedied by rest. However, this is not recommended for individuals with post-traumatic stress, epilepsy, and serious psychological disorders for obvious reasons.

In conclusion, hypnosis for weight loss can be a very effective tool but only with the right guidance and use.
