Lap Band Weight Loss Surgery

Lap band weight loss surgery, the minimum surgical intervention

Calorie Shifting - Lose 40 pounds in 12 weeks

Lap-Band weight loss surgery is technically referred to as adjustable gastric banding. Since the procedure is mostly done laparoscopically it is also referred to as laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding.

Laparoscopic lap band weight loss surgery is referred to as such because it uses a proprietary surgical device call LAP-BAND ® and uses the laparoscopic weight loss surgery procedure to secure the device onto the gastric system in the stomach.

Gastric Banding was approved by the United States Foods and Drugs Administration (FDA) in June 2001. And since, over 20,000 procedures have been done in the U.S and another 120, 000 internationally. Infact the lap band weight loss surgery is the most common weight loss surgery in both Europe and Australia.

And like all other surgical procedures to deal with obesity, the weight loss hand book Fat Loss 4 Idiots (lose 40 lbs with Calorie Shifting ) views this as a support structure. Of all surgical intervention this is viewed as the best as it is reversible. Fat Loss 4 Idiots (lose 40 lbs with Calorie Shifting ) hold that one should avoid being dependent on weight loss support structures in the long-term.

A study in Australia reported in the Annals of Medicine has indicated that the Lap Band can be more effective than Very Low Calorie Diets (VLCD). The study performed using obese patients with those with lap band surgery pitted against these under VLCD, prescription weight loss drugs and behavioral therapy.

After six months both groups lost 14% of their starting weight. But by the 24th month the lap band patient lost 22% of the starting weight meanwhile the diets regained to loss in totals only 5.5% of their starting weight. The gastric band resulted to loss of 87% of excess weight while the weight loss diet, weight loss drugs and behavioral therapy combined loss only 22% of excess weight.

And though lap band weight loss surgery sounds all rosy, it is important to be aware that like all other weight loss surgery procedures results are dependent as your motivation and commitment to the new lifestyle and eating habits. There are numerous stories of bariatric surgery patient regaining significant weight.

How Lap Band Surgery is Done

The lap band is inserted into your abdominal cavity using instrument used in laparoscopic surgery. The band is about ½ inch wide and longer than a foot.

On one end it has a locking device that is used to wrap around the upper part of the stomach. This lockable end results to separating the stomach into two, a small pouch on the top and the rest of the stomach of the bottom.

The device can also be controlled by injecting fluids to vary how much food can pass through from the small pouch to the rest of the stomach. The other end of this gastric band (LAP BAND®) is a small reservoir that holds saline solution.

When the doctor wants to restrict your stomach some more they inject saline solution serve around the stoma-ch narrowing the food passage from small pouch to large stomach. The whole lap band stays within the abdominal cavity.

The reservoir is placed near the skin where it can be punctured easily using a specialized needle to allow for relaxation and construction of the band. And like the other types of weight loss surgery, lap band weight loss surgery is a restrictive type of bariatric surgery used to control amounts of food eaten and reduces appetite.

In this procedure there is no gastric bypass and hence does not involve cutting the intestines.

The first gastric band was patented in 1985 by obtech medicalf of Sweden. But the more popular and most used today is one by NAMED Health known as Bio Entric LAP BAND® adjustable gastric banding system. However there are other brands.

Advantages of Gastric Banding

With time Lap Band weight loss surgery and similar banding may very likely become the most used weight loss surgical interventions due to their great advantage. They include
  • it is much cheaper than other procedure. It can cost between $14,000 - $18,000 in comparison to an average of $26,000 with the other procedures
  • It is currently the only reversible weight loss surgery procedure. All you need to do is to remove the band.
  • It is the least invasive procedure. Apart from the fit that it is done laporoscopically, it doesn’t permanently.
  • It has shorter hospital stays
  • It is as much as ten times safer to other procedures.
  • It is currently also the only adjustable weight loss surgery
  • It is covered by most insurance companies at least in the U.S.
Though lap band is all that, it still carries some risk of in surgery. They include 12% risk of banding eroding the stomach, a 5-10% chance that the banding may slip requiring revisional surgery.

And like most implant, the device will require maintenance and so a lifetime of occasional visits to the doctor.
