Laparoscopic Weight Loss Surgery

Laparoscopic weight loss surgery is state of the art

Laparoscopic weight loss surgery is a surgical intervention procedure for extreme obesity. It is done through state of the art weight loss surgery procedure called laparoscopic surgery. This space age technology is used as a replacement of the traditional open surgery, which involves cutting open the abdomen for the surgeon to reach the intestines to perform weight loss surgery.

Laparoscopic weight loss surgery is minimally invasive, meaning there is less cutting. And it allow for faster recovery of the patient.

This procedure that uses instruments inserted into the stomach to perform the surgery has been used for weight loss surgery since 1993. Though many may not have heard of laparoscopic surgery, those who have may still think it is an experimental procedure. On the contrary the procedure is now becoming a preferred technique in operating on the human torso. It is preferred for gastrointestinal surgeries like the said laparoscopic weight loss surgery, gynecological surgeries as well as urological surgeries.

Laparoscopy is also referred to as minimum invasive surgery, keyhole surgery, bandaid surgery or video-scopic surgery.

It then goes on to explain associated risks and complicati0ns among other crital issues you should know if you want to lose weight using surgery.

Surgery is a very sever intrevention and is often used in cases where it is necessary to save lives.

This form of surgery is performed through five incisions on different parts of the torso (abdomen).

Each incision are about ¼-1/2 an inch long. The incisions are made gently by separating the patient’s muscles to enter the abdomen with minimum cutting.

The incisions allow the necessary instruments to be passed through.

The first instrument is a telescope rod lens that is connected to a video camera.

This relays the image of the internal organs to a screen which the surgeon views to perform the operation.

Also attached is a cable to what is referred to as cold light. This is used to illuminate the area where the operation will be performed for clear images. Unlike the normal light sources, cold lights like xenon or halogen lights produce very low heat. The use of normal light would easily scotch and injure internal organs.

Another two incisions are used for the surgical instruments to reach the working area. The surgeon controls them from outside to abdomen by viewing real time video images.

In the procedure, carbon dioxide gas is pumped into the abdomen to inflate it to create working and viewing space.

The most common types of weight loss surgery to be performed laparoscopically are Roux-en-Y, Gastric Bypass and Lap Band weight loss surgery (Adjustable Gastric Banding).

And like all other weight loss surgery procedures weight loss diets and weight loss exercises should have be attempted and failed.

Advantages of Laparoscopic Weight Loss Surgery

Laparoscopic weight loss surgery has some attractive advantage for instance, the whole procedure takes a significantly less time on the operating table. This is particularly because the time to both cut the abdomen and chew it back is eliminated.

This has the added advantages of having the patient being under anesthesia for a shorter time, greatly increasing chances of a successful operation.

The procedure also has reduces blood loss hence nearly eliminates the need for blood transfusion. And unlike open surgery which leave a long scar from the navel to just below the chest bone, laparoscopic surgery has only five relatively small scars.

Furthermore, the less incision results to the patient experiencing less pain and consequently requiring less medication. This in turn translates to shorter hospital time and quickens return to normal activities.

The smaller incisions reduce the exposure of internal organs to possible external contaminations greatly reducing risk of infection and other risk of bariatric surgery. But like all other weight loss surgeries, the patient needs to undergo a diet change.

After the surgery, the patient will have to take up the weight loss surgery diet that ensures complete healing of the procedure as well as loss of weight.

Disadvantages

Unfortunately laparoscopic weight loss surgery also has disadvantage. Some are the common bariatric surgery risks while others are specific to the procedure.

The more serious of the disadvantages is the occurrence of infections particularly peritonitis. This is a condition of inflammation of the peritoneum which is a membrane that lines part of the abdominal cavity.

The patient may sustain electrical burns from surgical instruments that may leak current to surrounding tissue. If these injuries are not detected by the surgeon, they can lead to infections hence peritonitis.

Another risk involves the carbon dioxide gas used to inflate the abdominal cavity to create space. Not all the gas is pumped out. Some of it is left and travels through the body as gas bubbles. Often it settles around the shoulders. At times the gas bubbles may move to the solar plexus that results to considerable pain when lying down.

Patient with some form of pulmonary (lung) disorders may not tolerate the carbon dioxide gas and will need open weight loss surgery. The procedure itself also has inherent disadvantages.

Primary among them is the fact that the instrument used in laparoscopic weight loss surgery can not exactly do what human hands can do. So with limited movement, the surgeon still has to perform the significantly complex surgery.

For example the surgeon can not move an organ out of the way to make room. However advances in the field are improving the procedure.

Laparoscopic weight loss surgery is a specialized field. You want to be sure your surgeon is well trained for the procedure. As it is possible that the surgeon you are consulting is not trained in Laparoscopic weight loss surgery. To make good decisions about weight loss surgery you need to be well informed.

Ultimatelly weight loss is about some few fundamentals. Whether you achieve these fundamentals by diet and exercises or ny surgery depends on your situation.
