Is south beach diet a fad or is it fact?

South Beach Diet is one of the more healthy yet popular weight loss diets. Unlike others like Atkins Diet, South Beach seems to go down fairly well with health experts. 

Just like Hampton's Diet this diet is derived from a book, 'South Beach Diet' and is by a doctor, Dr Arthur Agatston.

Dr Agatston is a cardiologist, associate professor of medicine at the University of Miami Medical School. Dr Agatston developed the South Beach Diet as an eating plan for his heart patients to improve their cholesterol and insulin levels. 

It is considered as one of the famous weight loss diets due to unsolicited endorsements by celebrities. Fat Loss 4 Idiots (lose 40 lbs with Calorie Shifting ) refers to such diets as celebrity diets. It includes a version for vegetarians. Along side the book there is also South Beach Diet online, which seems to be more popular. 

The online weight loss version uses an interactive web page as a companion and guide during the weight loss period. Here you find links to;

South Beach Diet online has a complete meal scheduler, it even allows you to develop a private journal to make entries about your progress; which you may or may not choose to share with the public. The south beach diet guides you through the dieting program in three stages as follows:

 

South Beach Diet Strict Phase

This is the first stage and is called strict because it is restrictive on what foods you may eat. Everyone joining South Beach Diet is encouraged to start from here. It is supposedly designed to eliminate cravings for starch and sweets. Now it is this kind of statements that can start you into thinking, this is fad. More often than not, craving in this case may be more of a psychological than physiological.

Fat Loss 4 Idiots (lose 40 lbs with Calorie Shifting ) differentiates physiological cravings from psychological ones. Both create a tendency to over-indulge by default. However they require different techniques to resolve. Most diets including this one always approach it from a physiological aspect.

The emphasis of a high protein, high fat low carbohydrates diet puts the south beach diet among the contentious Low Carb Diets. We do know now that low carb diets are effective for short-term loss of weight. However the argument forwarded by South Beach Diet promoters is that this phase detoxifies the blood off excess glucose, bringing blood sugar under control. Considering this diet was first designed to control blood sugar this is to be expected.

Previously a high fat diet was thought to increase the risk of heart disease but now we know it is not so. And even if it was, the strict phase of south beach diet lasts only two weeks and it would not really have an adverse effect on an otherwise healthy individual. Contrary to previous beliefs, diet high in "good" fats is known to reduce risks of heart disease.

 

The South Beach Diet Weight Loss Stage

This phase naturally follows phase one. But if you start dieting with low body fat you will be allowed to start from this stage. In this stage you will be reintroducing carbohydrates back into your diet after eliminating them in the first phase. The south beach diet is specific to only what they call "right carbs", these are essentially low Glycemic Index (G.I) carbohydrates.

Low G.I carbs are carbohydrates that do not result to sharp increase in the blood sugar after consumption. There a whole bunch of diets based on this concept called Glycemic Index Diets. Keeping in mind that the first stage stabilized your blood sugar, this stage maintains it within safe levels.

Phase two is nutritionally and metabolically designed for loss of body fat. Body fat metabolism occurs in the presence of oxygen and some carbohydrates. In the near complete absence of carbs, the body may think it is starving and end up holding more onto body fat the higher energy source and use muscle tissue instead as source of energy.

Reintroduction of carbohydrates continues until one reaches what the South Beach Diet calls carbohydrate tolerance. This is the point were consumption of carbs results to increase in weight meaning the body is now getting excess calories. This stage varies from person to person.

It is naturally expected that by the time you are at carb tolerance, carbohydrates will be the major source of calories in your diet, at least for most people. This is probably why South Beach Diet promoters say that South Beach Diet is not a low carb weight loss diet.

 

The South Beach Diet Maintenance Stage

This is the last stage, where the participant is released into the real world. The assumption is that you have acquired enough lifestyle change to maintain your success.

In conclusion, it would be wrong to classify South Beach Diet among the fads. Flirting with contentious dietary issues doesn't make it fad. However, lack of a comprehensive exercising regime in the South Beach Diet is quite fad like.

Many diets, including South Beach, may need some adjustments so that they can be effective to an individual.
