Toning abs is proving to be the ultimate fitness heart break. And that is because everybody want it; a flat stomach that is, but few can show anything close to it. Equally, many people understand; tone your abs and you have a flat stomach, a six pack or even a set of 8 pack abs.

Then comes in the contradictions and confusion, how exactly do you go about toning abs? Some swear by cardio, some do as many crunches as they can daily, others believe in weight training, while other scoff at the abdominal exercises altogether and believe abs are made in the kitchen. It is what you eat that determines if you have a flat stomach or not, they argue. So which is it?

Let’s get some basics down first. Wikipedia refers to toning as "the aim to develop a physique with a large emphasis on musculature…. In this respect, the term toned implies leanness in the body, low levels of body fat, and noticeable muscle definition and shape."

We can therefore extrapolate that toning is about changing body composition so that your body has relatively less fat and more muscle. 

And if you have more muscle or lean tissue relative to your fat tissue, then you are said to be toned.

In this state, your body muscles seem to be well defined because they are minimally obscured by body fat that is usually above the muscles. 

The ultimate tone for most people is achieved when your abdominal muscles are visibly defined to show the holy grail of fitness – the six pack abs.

 

Toning abdominal muscles is all about fat loss

Another way of looking at toning is to see it as the means by which you lose body fat covering your muscles. 

Ultimately toning is about losing body fat using exercise that also sculpt the muscle so it looks firm and well defined.

The million dollar question in toning then should be; what is the most effective way to lose body fat? 

Making muscles more dense and firm definitely improves muscle tone, but of what use is toning if your ab muscles if they will remain covered under two inches of body fat?

Toning then has two main objectives, to firm up your muscles and to lose the fat covering your muscles. Effective abs toning is then what results to a visible six pack.

 

How to lose stomach fat

As we have seen, toning your abs has to do with losing stomach fat. But unlike what many believe you cannot exactly target fat loss to a particular part of your body. When your body is losing body fat, it tends to lose it in the order it put it on.

Generally, the last part to get body fat will generally be the first area to start losing body fat. This order is a predisposition of your genetic make up. But all in all your body will tend to lose fat from all over the body, but seem to favor some parts more than others.

Unfortunately for most of us, stomach fat is one of those areas that tend to lose fat last. So to tone your abs you will need to target extreme fat loss. To see your chiseled middle you need to have a very low body fat percentage. This means that compared to your muscles, your body fat should be very little.

A low body fat percentage means you have paper thin body fat spread out all over your body. Such little at will allow your toned abs to stand out in full glory under your skin.

So considering stomach fat is among the last fat to completely be lost on your body, when you talk of losing stomach fat you are literally talking about losing body fat in general.
