Fat Burning Zone
What
does fat burning zone really mean for weight loss?
The famous fat burning zone is
every where you look in the fitness world. It’s on websites,
on TV even in cardio machines in the gym. Unfortunately that term "fat
burning zone" is really deceptive to the regular Jane and Joe because
it mis-communicates a fact. So the question is does it help you in your
quest for a flat stomach? Does it help you lose body fat?
First, as you will
notice in the video by Coach Dan of OnelineFitCoach.com, the fat
burning zone does exist. He might not be very enthusiastic about, but
it is a fact.
Your body can use
all the three main food groups for energy. That is carbohydrates,
proteins and fat. But your body understands energy sources as glucose
and triglycerides. Your body gets glucose from mainly carbs and the
triglycerides from fat. In times when glucose is not easily available,
your body will use digest proteins and extract the glucose molecule
from it.
To provide energy
both of these energy sources (glucose and fat) use different
bio-chemical pathways. For example, fat requires oxygen to release
energy. Glucose on the other hand does not. So when you are in an
intense activity, you generally are not providing enough oxygen to your
body to burn fat, so your body switches to using glucose. And if
glucose in the blood, liver and muscle tissue is depleted, your body
cannibalizes your muscle tissue to get that precious glucose.
On the flip side,
when you are sleeping for example, your energy needs are not that high.
So the natural breathing is supplying enough oxygen to burn fat and
sufficiently caters for your total energy needs.
The fat burning
zone is a level of activity that optimizes the percentage of fat
providing energy. So instead of sleeping that does not use a lot of
calories, you will be walking. Walking
uses more energy. At the same time your breathing is supplying enough
oxygen to make sure that most of the energy you are using in the
activity is being supplied from body fat.
But if you
increase the intensity and let’s say you run you will notice
you breathing is getting heavy. You are requiring more energy in running than
walking, so your body demands for more energy so you can keep using fat
to supply energy. When you can no longer breathe enough oxygen to
supply all energy from fat, you body starts to use more glucose to
compensate for their deficiency.
So really, the fat
burning zone is a zone where by the higher percentage of your energy
requirements are supplied by fat. But as demonstrated in the video,
this does not take total calories burn from fat into consideration.
This is why fat burning zone is confusing to many.
In weight loss you
are targeting burning the maximum amounts of calories from fat during a
weight
loss exercise. As such the fat burning zone will
just hold you back. Generally speaking, you will burn more fat in a
higher intensity activity which is way past the fat burning zone that
you will in the fat burning zone.
But you should
remember, exercises are the smaller part of weight loss. You first need
an effective weight
loss diet. You can burn all the fat possible, but as long as
you keep replenishing them using them using the food you eat, you will
be stuck in a rut.
