Waist Hip Ratio

Waist to hip ratio is better diet tool

Waist Hip Ratio is another weight loss tools that compliments other health indices. Unlike food weight loss calculators e.g. calorie counting; glycemic load or food pyramids it is used to quantify how much body fat you have. This tool has proven to be fairly effective in estimating risk of obesity and related conditions like heart disease, hypertension, stroke, insulin resistance and diabetes.

Waist Hip Ratio was theorized by Prof. Devendar Sign of the department of Psychology at the University of Texas. He found it while studying human physical attractiveness. Evidently what is universally considered physical attractive and beautiful in both man and women, is also healthy.

Clinicaly the ratio is used to determine body composition, particularly fat distribution on the torso. We store fat differently depending on our genetic make-up. Some deposit most of their fat around the abdomen i.e. in the middle of their torso (trunk) this results to what is referrered to as an apple shaped body.

Others deposit their fat around their hips, thighs and buttocks resulting to a pear shape.

Here most of the weight is towards the lower end of your trunk.

In some cases fat is generally deposited equally along the whole torso.

This has at times referred to as avocado shape.

Abdominal adiposity (fat) such as the one in apple shaped individuals has been associated with increased risk of diseases that often accompany obesity.

This means that two individuals with equally overweight would have different risks to co-morbid factor.

If one is pear shaped and the other apple shaped. The later would be in higher risk.

Waist/hip ratio is an advancement of waist circumference another diet tools.

Calculating Waist Hip Ratio

To calculate waist/hip ratio, get the circumference of the waist and that of the hip then divide the former with the later.
Waist Hip Ratio = Waist Circumference / Hip Circumference
To get the waist circumference place a non-stretching tape around the narrowest width of your stomach as seen from the front. This would mean do not measure your waist on top of "love handles". Tape should also be above the hipbone.

To get the hip measurements, place the tape on the widest part of the bottom as seen from the side. In both cases the tape should be parallel to the floor.

The healthy range for men is 0.90 and below while for women it is 0.85 and below .The small difference is because naturally women have larger hips that will tend to reduce the ratio. Some sources point at 0.7 for women being optimal for health while for men it remains at 0.9

Excess health risks normally associated with body mass index (BMI) are known to falsely decline with age. And this is because the body composition changes as you age. Older people tend to have less muscle tissue that significantly reduces BMI.

Waist Hip Ratio unlike BMI measures body composition and therefore gives a truer picture. Indeed by using waist hip ratio, it has been correctly shown that the risk of older people with excess body fat still remains. However in comparison to other indices like waist circumference, it is considered a little less accurate. This is probably due to inconsistencies introduced by the hip measurement that is influenced significantly by genetics.
