Weight Loss Pill

Finding the most effective weight loss pills

'There is no magic pill for weight loss'

Weight loss pills are among the most searched for method for losing weight. Consequently they are included favorably or unfavorably in most solutions for losing weight.

In the weight loss guide, Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle, the weight loss pill is discussed as a support structure for a comprehensive weight loss regime. Such a weight loss plan is designed for permanent weight loss through lifestyle change.

Lack of effective and long-term support structures is listed as one of the top 4 reasons for weight loss failure, in this guide. But is the weight loss pill effective as a weight-loss support structure?

Existing weight-loss pills fall into two main categories according to how you access them, Prescription weight loss pills and Over-the-Counter weight loss pills.

Prescription weight-loss pills

These weight-loss pills are essentially obesity drugs- anorexiants, often referred to as weight loss drugs. They are available only through a doctor’s prescription. Being weight-loss drugs, they are stringently controlled by the FDA. They are prescribed mainly for morbid obesity.

All prescription weight-loss pills are FDA approved as effective in the short term. Their effectiveness becomes less significant at 4-6 months. The common weight-loss drugs include Adipex, Pontril, Didrex and Meridia which is the only one FDA approved weight-loss pill for long term use.

OTC weight-loss pill

Most of the advertised weight-loss pills fall in this category. The FDA considers them as weight loss supplements and not as drugs, so they are not closely monitored. These particular diets pills are highly controversial amongst weight loss expert both being manufactures and critics. This really confuses the public.

Do weight-loss pills work?

Yes, a good number of them do work with varying effectiveness. Diet pills both prescription and OTC try to find ways to introduce a gap between calorie intake and calorie expenditure. We can further group them according to their action as;

  • Carbs, Starch or Fat Inhibitors,
  • Fat Burners
  • and Appetite Suppressants.

Inhibitor: Inhibitor pills are designed to reduce the digestion of the calorie proving foods. This may be by blocking digestion of that food such that some significant amounts of it pass through the digestive tract without being broken down. Consequently this reduces the amount of calories absorbed.

They target to reduce the ability of the digestive system to optimally breakdown these foods by mainly interfering with the digestive enzyme involved.

For example, carbohydrate blockers inhibit the metabolism process of carbs into stored body fats. The active ingredient in such weight loss pills is, an enzyme found in dry kidney beans, that inhibits the alpha amylase the principle enzyme in carbohydrates breakdown to blood sugar.

Theoretically the science behind such a pill is sound, unfortunately, in practice, its success is found to be widely varying. It is supposed that the failure may be due to the blocker/inhibitor having a bond targeted by digestive juices such that in the stomach it is rendered ineffective.

Xenical, for example is a weight loss drug that act as lipases or fat inhibitors. They work in the gastric tract to reduce up to 30% of Fats from being absorbed and digested. Interestingly it is recommended that you combine it with a low fat diet.

Fat Burners: Fat burning pills raise body’s metabolism causing it to use more calories. This weight loss pill is also known as a thermogenic. If their action can be sustained they can prove to be quite effective.

The argument against them is that the effect they develop does not result to significant weight loss. More research is required.

Appetite Suppressants: An appetite suppressants weight loss pills on the other hand tries to play down your appetite for food. They may get to act on the nervous system to deter hunger signals from being processed as a need for food.

These are probably the more successful of the other OTCs.

Others try to give a satiety feel. Fiber based pills can be very effective to this end with minimal side effects. Insoluble fiber, a complex starch is a necessary nutrient that on hydration expands. It can be used with some significant weight loss in the short term.

Though some weight loss pills may work, it is still correct to say none of them will result to permanent weight loss. By themselves they are not a solutions and only significant in the short term.

Prescription weight loss pills are used against the risks of morbid obesity but under medical supervision. Since they are drugs they do have side effect and a doctor weighs the risk presented by both before using it in a weight loss program.

In such a case the doctor would be trying to jump start your weight loss and quickly reducing risks of obesity. Such a prescription would have nearly little effect if not accompanied by a healthy balanced diet with controlled calorie intake and some level of weight loss exercising.

Side Effects of Pills

Weight loss pills exhibit side effect to users. Prescription diet pills have not shown any side effects that cannot be reversed or fatal so far in significant numbers. This is with the exception of PhenFen which was detected early and appropriately controlled.

Similarly OTC pills have not shown significant anomalies. The risk here though is more on losing your money on a bogus diet pill. Weight loss pills are part of over a $30 billion weight loss market. It is estimated over $6 billion is spent on bogus and scam products - so buyer beware.

Side effects of weight loss pills include restlessness, nervousness, euphoria, dry mouth, constipation, diarrhea, tremor, anxiety, dizziness, and even impotence. In rare case, seizure and stroke occur in unhealthy individuals. Weight loss pills should not be used by children or expectant mothers unless under medical supervision

Even using a genuine and effective weight loss pill without a complementing, lifestyle changing weight loss program gives you only a small 5% chance of NOT regaining nearly all your weight back.

A weight loss pill is only successful when used in a comprehensive weight loss program. The book Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle details characteristics of such a program. This book lists the top four reasons why you fail in losing weight permanently.

The lack of any of these four is a sure way of losing weight and regaining it over time.

One of the four is what it terms as support structures. A weight loss pill can be included in you weight loss plan as a support structure to effect fast but permanent weight loss. The guide shows how to determine an effective weight loss pill and how to use it for greatest effect.
