Weight Loss Programs
Different types of weight loss programs
'Adversity is the first path to truth.'
George Gordon Byron
There is really no one-fits all kind of a weight loss program. This understanding can be most liberating for anyone trying to lose weight.
Going by testimonials published by different diet programs, it seems like if you cannot lose weight with their particular weight loss program then you must be having a problem.
Indeed, knowing that there is not exactly a one-fit-all weight loss program is so liberating even for diet companies targeting the same markets. In trying to get customers diet companies tend to beat up other programs while really each diet can be used to service a niche of the dieting community.
The fact that there is no one-fit-all diet is one of the premises upon which the weight loss handbook Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle is based on.
When you try a weight loss program and it doesn’t turn out well for you, you either regain the weight back, or you do not seem to be able to keep up with it, it may simply mean the particular diet is not for you. This is why you often hear of someone singing praises for a weight loss program which you find did nothing to help you.
Obesity is a result of a number of factors; they include eating habits, choice of foods, lifestyle, cultural beliefs etc. To effectively deal with obesity on an individual basis then your diet program should be able to isolate and deal effectively with those diseasing factors that result to your being obese. The best weight loss program then depends on this determination and consequently dealing with it effectively.
Though loss of weight depends on particular proven principles, different people have different reasons for being fat. If these particular reasons are not dealt with inlight of the weight loss principles then you lose weight, if ever, but put it on again.
The problem with weight loss programs is that they are designed to deal with generic diseasing factors rather than specific diseasing factors. And when they are dealing with the specific diseasing factors, they do not make you aware of it. So you end up choosing a weight loss program depending on the results it had on someone else yet that other person had very different weight loss demons to deal with.
Every weight loss program has a central theme on which it is based on. The thing they believe it can effectively deal with to help you lose weight. Below are some common types of weight loss programs.
Diet based weight loss programs
These are probably the most popular of all weight loss programs. They include a majority of the weight loss diets such as Atkins, South Beach, and No Flour No Sugar Diet.
The central theme of such weight loss programs is the fundamental reality that you need a calorie deficit to lose weight. Such weight loss programs are designed with the core belief that your main problem is excess calorie intake. They are designed to introduce a calorie deficit mainly through your diet.
Diet based weight loss programs are of all kinds. They include highly restrictive diets to those that help you determine your portions. Some are even propose a lifestyle around their diets like the low carb craze that hit North America.
Some of these diets have gone to the extreme of demonizing some food types. Their support structures here include diet plans, recipes, prepackaged foods etc.
Exercise bases weight loss programs
This group includes companies like Global Health Fitness, an internet fitness company by fitness instructor Chad Tacket to Curves, a women’s fitness and weight loss franchise. Curves was reported as the fastest growing franchise in the U.S by Entrepreneur magazine in 2004.
These weight loss programs propose that your biggest challenge in losing weight is lack of expenditure of calories. So they are designed to help you expend excess calories. They encourage different kinds of exercises with the intention of cutting back your weight.
Pharmacotherapy weight loss programs
These weight loss programs depend on drug therapy and treatment to control obesity. They have become an attractive method for losing weight because its “easy”. All you need to do is pop a pill a number of times a y and you are on our way to weight loss.
Drugs used in such weight loss programs include prozac, meridian, xenical etc. Time has also seen an increase in OTC (over the counter) kind of weight loss pill. Most of them are more of supplements. The actions of these pills vary. For the most prescription weight loss pill, they target the neurological system to deal with food cravings and induce a state of satiety.
The OTC tend to help increase satiety in a different way. They include use of high fibre ingredients. Such pills include Anna Nicole Smith weight loss pills
Behavioral change weight loss programs
Such programs include weight loss programs like MEND – a U.K based weight loss plan for overweight and obese kids. These programs target change in behavior, lifestyle and eating habits of the kids and their families. A similar weight loss program is Dr Phil’s Diet.
Such programs view the problem of obesity as an attitude and behavioral problem. Therefore they target to change, modify and improve thought, attitude and change behavior to induce weight loss.
Surgery based weight loss programs
This has probably the fastest growing appeal to the extremely over weight partly due to the promotion and recommendations of doctors. It involves a surgery of your digestive system. The procedure is done in such away that your stomach is reduced so that you eat less. It may also include the reduction of effective length of your intestines to reduce calorie absorption.
You will notice each central theme of these weight loss programs tend to have different impacts on different people. This depends on the fundamental reasons that result to your being overweight – your diseasing factor. A diet that is able to target your specific diseasing factor can be able to effectively result to permanent weight loss. The weight loss guide details the concept of diseasing factors.
