Weight loss supplements differ significantly with drug or medications for losing weight. As opposed to weight loss drugs, diet supplements are not regulated by government bodies like Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the U.S or Pharmaceutical Agencies and Ministries of Health in other parts of the world. 

The weight loss supplements are considered to be as food supplements which are also not closely regulated. Ofcourse this does not include weight loss laxatives that are ill-informed weight loss methods. 

Though often presented as natural and safe, you should be aware that a number of drugs are also made from plant extracts just like these weight loss supplements. Further more, some weight loss supplements are known to adversely interact with particular medications and you are advised to consult your doctor if you want to take weight loss supplements while under medication.

Chitosan

As a weight loss supplement, the dietary preparation of chitosan binds to fat that you eat and blocks its absorption into the blood stream. And since chitosan itself is indigestible, the fiber and the fat bound onto it is extracted through bowel movements. 

The exact effectiveness of chitosan as a weight loss supplement however in weight loss is not clear. It is theorized that if chitosan is very effective in binding dietary fat, then it automatically mean it can also adversely affect the absorption of the fat soluble vitamins i.e. Vitamin A, D, E and K as well as the uptake of essential fatty acids i.e. Omega 3 and Omega 6. An associated side effect is constipation and flatulence. 

Chromium
Chromium is an essential trace mineral, meaning it’s a nutrient that the body requires in small amounts. Some researches have indicated that additional chromium to some group of people results to normalization of sugar level e.g. diabetics. They also show effect of improved insulin utilization, reduced fat deposition and improved entry of glucose and amino acids into muscle cells. 

What you need to understand is that insulin has an effect on levels of blood glucose and how your body stores glucose as body fat. Therefore chromium effect on insulin, fat metabolism and consequent appetite suppression and fat metabolism has included it among the more effective ingredients of weight loss supplements. 

But it should be noted that chromium supplementation does not work for every one. It seems to work for individuals who have little dietary chromium. Highly processed carbohydrates generally have been stripped off most of the nutrients including chromium. As a result, people whose diets consist of mainly refined foods seem to have the most benefit from chromium supplementation. 

As a weight loss supplement, it is used as chromium picolinate which suppresses appetite and cravings, levels sugar in blood and enhances body’s fat burning metabolism. It seems to be a very viable supplement for weight loss and is used in some fat burners

Citrus Aurantium
This ingredient has been used as a substitute for ephedra, a herb that was banned by the U.S FDA. Before it was banned, its use as ephedra weight loss as well as in fat burner stacks was known to be very effective. Its consequent combination with other stimulants to make it even more dramatic in results resulted to recorded fatalities leading to its banning.

Ephedra is the natural similar of ephedrine and pseudo-ephedrine found in many OTC (over the counter) cold and allergy medications. Citrus Aurantium is synephrine fruit also known as Zhi Shi in traditional Chinese medicine or green orange, sour orange and bitter orange in other parts of the world. It contains the compound synephrine, a mild stimulant similar to caffeine and epheridine. 

It is claimed to increase metabolic rate, increase calorie expenditure and increase energy levels, increase fat metabolism and consequently result to weight loss. These claims are probably true; however they are not as significant as always claimed. Any scientific backing is still weak. 

The probable route for effecting weight loss could just be decreased appetite and the increased feeling of energy as well as a slight increase of BMR all of which can lead to loss of weight. Being a mild stimulant it is known to increase blood pressure and should be avoided by people with cardiovascular concerns like hypertension. If you use daily medication consult with your doctor first. 

CLA
Conjugated Linolenic Acid (CLA) is a naturally occurring fatty acid found in meat, lamb and dairy products. As a diet supplement, it is sold as a weight loss pill or syrup and requires NO doctor’s prescription. 

It has shown scientific indications, though varying, of increasing metabolic rate, decreasing abdominal fat, enhance muscle growth, lowering cholesterol and triglycerides, lowers insulin resistance, reduction in food allergies and enhance immunity. However it also has negative indications of slightly increasing both LDL – the bad cholesterol and HDL – the good cholesterol, increase of lipo-protein levels that are markers of inflammation and heart disease as well as slight increase of white blood cells which could trigger artery inflammation. 

In total though, preliminary results seem to indicate CLA to be much more beneficial than harmful. Infact its results are independent of weight loss diets and weight loss exercises. However you should not expect magical results from this weight loss supplement, it averages 4 pounds of weight loss in a year with out change of diet or exercises. Obviously it would be most effective combined with a healthy weight loss program

Processing of CLA rich foods leads to general deficiency. Without CLA, some aspects of your metabolism fail to operate optimally. It helps in effective entry of glucose into muscle tissues avoiding it from being turned to fat. It also helps fat to penetrate cell membrane of muscles and connective tissues where it’s burned for fuel. 

Garcina Cambogia
This is a native pumpkin like fruit of India and South East Asia. It is also called brindal berry, garikapuli or malaba tamarid. It contains high concentrations of Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) which s closely related to the citric acid found in grape fruit or oranges. 

HCA is used in weight loss supplement as a fat inhibitor and appetite suppressant. It is believed to block the conversion of sugary foods and starch into fat. Secondly, it is believed to raise levels of certain brain chemicals such as serotin, a key regulator of appetite, hence its appetite suppressant qualities. 

Research evidence is not conclusive for both effects but it is still a popular ingredient in weight loss supplements. It is often used together with St John Wart and chromium. Being a long time traditional food of South East Asia it is presumed to be very safe. Other weight loss supplements ingredients include

  • Yerba mate
  • Hoodia weight loss
  • Pyruvate
  • Plantago Psyllium
  • Hydroxymethylbutyrate (HMB)
  • Guarana
The truth of the matter is that some blends of these ingredients do assist in weight loss. However keeping in mind the amount of weight one needs to lose, the effect they have is generally small. Consequently the weight loss supplements need to be used together with other weight loss techniques.
