Cut back on booze

There are two primary problems with alcohol when it comes to losing weight. The first and probably most critical is that alcohol reduces your body natural fat burning (fat oxidation) process.

Very little of the alcohol you consume becomes fat. Most of it is acted on by the liver resulting to a compound called acetate. Acetate is a compound that your body can actually use as fuel just like carbs or fats. But here is the problem… in the presence of acetate, your body will always use acetate first for fuel before carbs or fats.

A study in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that two drinks of vodka with sugar-free lemonade 30 minutes apart dropped fat metabolism by over 70%. Both drinks carried a total of 180 calories only.

The last thing you want when trying to lose weight is t o shut down your fat burning capabilities.

The second problem with alcohol is that it tends to increase appetite. Infact some studies by researchers from Denmark's Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University as well as another from Canada shows that alcohol increases appetite much more than soft-drinks when served before a meal.

An increased appetite creates a likely hood of eating more. Eating more creates likely hood of eating more wrong food. Wrong food obviously will make you fat.

So the ideal thing to do is to eliminate alcohol when trying to lose weight. Otherwise drink rarely, probably once a week in moderation and during your rest days. Actually consider drinking as a cheat.

Ooh, and by the way, alcohol contains some carbs and calories. There are seven calories per gram of alcohol. A single glass of white wine or an ounce and half of hard liquor provides about 90 calories; a regular beer gives you 150 (a light beer provides about 110). You can almost double the calories in hard liquor if you add a mixer such as fruit juice or tonic water. A typical martini contains 210 calories and a Pina Colada in excess of 300.

 

Use full body workouts

If you are not doing any exercises at all start on full body exercises using your body as weight i.e. body weight exercises. They can be done at home or anywhere you have space.

If you are lifting weight, alternate between split and full body workouts bi-weekly. Do two weeks of split routines (you know Monday id chest and back, Wednesday is legs kind of regime) to working all you body muscles in one day; preferably using interval training.

Intense full body workouts tend to keep your bodies "after-burn" much higher and much longer. "After-burn" is a term referring to the increase in metabolism that results to most of the fat loss the occurs die to working out.

If you are not working out at all, add some full body, body weight exercises. These are great workouts fro beginners as well as advanced. And they will get you as much results as using weights. The only difference is that you will not be as built after losing the fat as when you use weight.
