Does weight loss yoga lead to loss of weight?


 

 Weight loss yoga is yet another suggested way of losing weight by exercising. With a society never hesitant of inventing phrases, yoga is one of those terms that attract such. Put massage before yoga and you have massage yoga, dance and you have dance yoga. There is even hot yoga which is done in high temperature confinements.

    With the increasing emphasis of weight loss exercises as central in losing weight and with yoga seen as a work out technique is weight loss yoga feasible practically? Can you loss weight with yoga?

    Like similar exercise e.g. weight loss pilates, weight loss yoga will not result in you shedding a whole lot of pounds. But as  Fat Loss 4 Idiots (lose 40 lbs with Calorie Shifting ) reveals, this does not mean that it doesn’t compliment a weight loss program.

    Yoga means yoke as in the wooden frame that is used to co-join two oxen to pull a plough. It is a reference to the bringing together of mind, spirit and body entailed in the yoga practice.

    And though yoga is traced back to the Hindu spiritual philosophy in itself it is not a religion. Infact the way it has been packaged to be attractive to the western societies is really as a work-out technique.

    On the other hand though, yoga is not a sport, competitive or otherwise.

    There are a myriad of yoga technique, but it is the more physically intense forms that are linked with any weight loss. Most of such forms are closely related to the form called Hatha Yoga.

    According to what are believed as ancient writing called the ‘Song of the Lord’ or the Bhavgavad Gita, there are four main branches of yoga. They include
    • Karma Yoga - yoga of action in the world
    • Jnana Yoga - yoga of wisdom and intellectual endeavor
    • Bhakti yoga - yoga of devotion to God
    • Raja yoga - the yoga of meditation.
    The yoga we are most familiar with is the Raja Yoga that uses meditation as the means to achieve a goal. Another yogi sage called Pantanjali has referred to this kind of yoga as Ashtanga yoga. This means the eight limbed yoga referring to its eight main aspects.

    The forms of yoga believed to be able to lead to some small extent of weight loss or even weight management are development of Raja yoga, the main being Hatha yoga.

     

    Hatha Yoga for Weight Loss

    Unlike classic Raja where the purification of the mind and the spirit leads to purification of the body, in Hatha it is the reverse. This means that Hatha yoga focuses on purification of the physical body leading to the purification of the mind.

    Having an emphasis on the physical it primarily involves posture or what are referred to as “asana” as well as breathing or “pranoyama”. Infact what the westerm world refers to as “yoga” is often Hatha yoga. This has greatly contributed to yoga been viewed as an exercise and therefore expected to result to some extent of weight loss albeit little.

    Weight loss primarily depends on a calorie deficit. This deficit as detailed in  Fat Loss 4 Idiots (lose 40 lbs with Calorie Shifting ) can be arrived to using two main avenues. First, through restricting calorie intake using a weight loss diet. The other is by increasing calorie expenditure using weight loss exercises while keeping calorie intake constant. The resulting calorie deficit will then demand of the body to use up it reserve energy of body resulting to weight loss.

    When looking at weight loss yoga as an exercise to impact your weight we have to look if it has the effect of what an effective weight loss exercise should have.

    First is weight loss aerobics. To use body fat as source of energy, the body needs to be provided with enough amount of oxygen consistently during the exercise. The presence of enough oxygen allows the process of lipolysis that breaks down fat into energy. Insufficient oxygen results to the body switching to less efficient means of providing energy using glucose instead.

    Secondly the increased Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) of muscle that have been subjected to intense exercises is also know to result to increased caloric expenditure up to 17 hrs after a weight training for example.

    The million dollar question then is does yoga result to any of these effects?

    The sad truth is that it really does not in any significant extent in most cases. Even with the more intense yoga practices like those taught by the American foremost Yoga teacher Baron Baptist (Power Yoga) it may not be effective to results to any significant weight loss.

    But this is no reason for despair.

    Nearly none of all weight loss exercises are known to cause huge calorie deficits. However when combined with diets it has been shown in a number of studies that it significantly increases weight loss. And even more importantly, nearly any kind of dedicated physical exertions are known to assist in maintaining weight loss.

    Furthermore weight loss yoga could have benefits a part from weight loss management. Its practioners note that it helps manage and even eliminate stress. Stress is a known and at times a significant contributor to obesity and weight gain. Conditions like emotional eating are related in some way with some level of stress.

    Stress results to increased secretion of a hormone called cortisol. The hormone is known to increase deposition of fat particularly around the abdomen.
